Reduction Woodcut Workshop

Join Ruairi Fallon for a workshop exploring the process of reduction printmaking, a relief printing method where a multi-coloured image is created using a single block of wood. This block is progressively carved away and reprinted, conventionally moving from light to dark colours. The process originating in China and gained international recognition through artists such as Hokusai and Picasso.

In this introductory session, we will focus on creating an A5, three-layer reduction woodblock print. We will look specifically at registration, mark-making, and colour theory. You will create an edition of five prints while getting a feel for chisel control, carving, mark-making, and registration.

All materials and paper will be provided as part of the workshop. Students are asked to bring an idea, a reference, or a drawing as a starting point for the print we will create during the session.

Participants should be over 16 years of age, unless participating in the workshop alongside a parent or guardian.
