Reduction woodcut taster session
Reduction woodcut taster session
A reduction woodcut is a multi-layered printmaking process in which a single wooden block is gradually carved away to create a colourful, multi-layered artwork.
The process is built around a repeating sequence of carving, colour mixing, inking and printing. With each layer, more of the wooden surface is removed, reducing the printable area of the block. The first marks carved into the block reveal the tone of the paper, while the next layer of carving reveals the first colour printed, and so on. Working progressively from light to dark, we can carve away more of the block with each stage, gradually refining the image, introducing new colours and building up layers of detail.
This reduction woodcut taster session is designed for beginners and experienced artists alike. Together, we will create a series of energetic abstract artworks, learning through experimentation and collaboration. We will carve, ink, print and repeat, with a particular focus on carving techniques, expressive mark-making and colour theory.
We will work collaboratively, overlapping carved and colourful patterns to explore how different marks, shapes and colours interact. By the end of the session, you will have created and taken home a minimum of three artworks, as well as a solid understanding of the physical process of reduction woodcut printing.
The tools and materials used during the taster session are affordable and accessible, and the techniques you learn can be easily adapted for use at home.
If you are interested in creating prints from a specific design or image, I also offer a longer-format Advanced Reduction Woodcut session as part of this series. This session allows more time to develop a planned composition and explore the reduction process in greater depth.
