Woodcut Workshop Carving and mark-making
Woodcut Workshop Carving and mark-making
Join Ruairi Fallon for a workshop exploring the process of woodcut printmaking; the oldest print making process in the world. It was used in the first mass production of books and more recently gripped the artworld with the German expressionist art movement including artists such as Kathe Kollwitz, and Edvard Munch. It is a graphic relief printing method where the artist transfers their artwork onto a wooden block and then uses small chisels to remove the negative space. The remaining design (surface of the block) is inked using rollers and then the design is transferred onto specialist papers.
We will be focusing primarily on carving and mark making to create complex mono-colour series of prints. In this introductory session, we will focus on creating a series of A5 woodblock print. We will look specifically at carving technique and mark-making. We will start the session by preparing and enveloping our design for transfer onto the block, we will explore mark making techniques before applying them to our design. Mark by mark texture by texture our image will emerge from the wooden block.
All materials and paper will be provided as part of the workshop. Students are asked to email me their idea, reference, or a drawing so I can format and print to size ahead of the session. This will be the starting point for the artworks we will create on the day.
Participants should be over 16 years of age, unless participating in the workshop alongside a parent or guardian.
